Sunderland Introduction

Sunderland Association Football Club (Sunderland A.F.C.) is a English association football club from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear; who currently play in the Premier League. Sunderland AFC was formed as Sunderland and District Teachers A.F.C. in 1879 by James Allan, but changed name to Sunderland Association Football Club in 1881. Sunderland turned professional in 1885 and joined The Football League in 1890-91 season, replacing Stoke City, and becoming the first new club to join since its inauguration in 1888. Sunderland won a third successive league championship in the 1893-94 seasons. Sunderland A.F.C won their fourth league title in the 1901-02 seasons.

Official nickname for Sunderland A.F.C. is "The Black Cats", chosen after a vote on the official club website in 2000. Sunderland AFC are also nicknamed as "The Mackems", "The SOLs", "The Miners", "The Light Brigade", "Red and White Army", "The Rokerites" and "Roker Men". In April 2010 Sunderland signed a two year shirt sponsorship deal with Tombola.

Sunderland A.F.C. celebrated its 100 year centenary in the 1979-80 seasons with a testimonial against a England XI side, which they lost 2-0. Sunderland appeared in their only League Cup final in 1985, but lost 1-0 to Norwich City. Sunderland has the seven stadia throughout their history. In 1997, Sunderland moved from their 1897-1997 home Roker Park to their new home, Stadium of Light in Monkwearmouth, which was opened by Prince Andrew, Duke of York. Future reconstruction would increase the Stadium of Light's capacity to reach 66,000.

Sunderland AFC are 6-time League champions and 5-time runners-up. Sunderland A.F.C. won FA Cup twice in 1937 and 1973 and have been runners-up twice. Sunderland have a notable rivalry with their neighboures Newcastle United, and both contest the Tyne-Wear Derby since 1898.


Sunderland A.F.C. were placed 10th in 2010-2011 season of Premier League and will try to move up the ranks in 2011-12 season of Premiership. 2011-12 season is Sunderland's fifth successive season in the top division of Premier League.
